What is Extraction?

Extraction is the first step to separate the desired natural products from the raw materials. #Extractionmethods include solvent extraction, distillation method, pressing and sublimation according to the extraction principle. Solvent extraction is the most widely used method.

Generally, the finer the particle size is, the better result the extraction achieves. The #extraction efficiency will be enhanced by the small particle size due to the enhanced penetration of solvents and diffusion of solutes. Too fine particle size, however, will cost the excessive absorption of solute in solid and difficulty in subsequent filtration.

Green extraction methods are being developed using modern technology where less or no organic solvents are used to minimize environmental and health impacts and to maximize the yield of desired polyphenols by selective extraction.

Polyphenols are abundant in natural sources like fruits, herbs and spices, nuts, roots and vegetables. Human health benefits, mainly as antioxidants, attracted researchers to recover them efficiently. Various types of food #polyphenols or phenolic compounds are identified. Solvents like water, alcohols (mainly ethanol and methanol) are used to extract polyphenols. Heat reflux, maceration, Soxhlet extraction, etc. were performed traditionally where large amounts of solvent had been used with longer time of extraction.

How to make your own #foodadditives?

From almost any fresh greens such as nettle, basil, parsley, kale, mangold, spinach etc., one can obtain potent juice, that will supply the body with green energy. Simply collect herbs from the garden to fill a kitchen blender. Pour a liter of boiled water over and let them #macerate for a couple of hours. Some grind the greens before pouring the water over them. It depends on the size of the #greens. After the water has cooled, grind the mixture and pour through a sieve, separating the pulp. Between mid June and August is the #mulbery harvest time. Black- Morus Nigra, white- Morus Alba or red- Morus Ruba fruits, are beloved to the scarab, fruitworms and many birds. Mulberries contain iron, vitamin C and a good amount of fiber. Wonderful health benefits, mulberries are also good for hair and skin and for silk production.

To harvest them, taste that the fruit is sweet and then pick it up. Easiest way is by setting a tarp under the tree and then shaking the branches. Lay the berries in a container that is not too deep, so the berries don't crash. Wash them well, rinse and remove the stems. This is the most time consuming part and should be done with gloves, to protect the hands from coloring.

For 1kg of mulberry, add 600 gr brown sugar, 3 geranium leaves and 4 fresh lavender stems (only the buds). Put in pot sugar, berries and herbs and let sit until they release their liquid (a couple of hours or more). Boil the jam until 105° C degrees. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 min. Then add 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Mulberries aren't rich in pectin and often they are cooked with sugar with pectin. If you use pectin, you can cook them only for 15 min and then store in sterilized jars. One can also substitute the 600 gr of sugar with 1 1/2 cup honey and 1 cup brown sugar.

It takes about 2,5 hours to make. Plus the time for harvesting and sterilize the jars, so in total around 4 hours.

The geranium or only lavender buds, add fragrant aroma. Brown sugar or honey contain better nutrients than white sugar. Honey is also probiotic. We used the #DineviBeeFarm nomadic honey. We didn't use pectin, so boiling it twice was necessary.

When creating the #RosemarySmudgeStick, it's important to have positive thoughts of light & love.

1 Collect clean and dry fresh rosemary sprigs. Remove any damaged or discolored leaves.

2 Trim the Rosemary sprigs to a uniform length, typically around 10-15 cm. Remove any excess foliage from the bottom portion of the sprigs.

3 Cut a length of cotton string, approximately 2-3 times the length of your trimmed rosemary sprigs. Mind that different color strings carry different potency of energy.

4 Gather the trimmed rosemary sprigs into a tight bundle, aligning the stems at one end. Ensure the foliage is evenly distributed.

5 Starting at the bottom of the bundle, tightly wrap the string around the rosemary sprigs, working your way up to the top. Secure the string with a knot.

6 Trim any excess string, leaving a small tail for hanging or burning purposes. Ensure the knot is secure and the smudge stick is tightly bound.

Malvaceae, the hibiscus, or mallow, family (order #Malvales) contains some 243 genera and at least 4,225 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees. All the Mallows (Malvaceoe) to the number of a thousand, agree in containing mucilage freely, and in possessing no unwholesome properties. Both this plant and its twin sister, the Marsh Mallow (Althaea hibiscus, from altho, to cure), possess medicinal virtues, which entitle them to take rank as curative #Herbal Simples. Pliny said: "Whosoever shall take a spoonful of the Mallows shall that day be free from all diseases that may come to him."

Their family name #Mallow is derived from the Greek malassein, "to soften," as alluding to the demulcent qualities of these mucilaginous plants. The Common Mallow is a well-known roadside plant, with large downy leaves, and streaked trumpet-shaped purple flowers, which later on furnish round button-like seeds, known to the rustics as #pickcheeses in Norfolk and elsewhere, whilst beloved by schoolboys, because of their nutty flavour, and called by them "Bread & Cheese."

TEA

Just soak in cold water. A heaped spoonful of mallow is put in 1/4 liter of water and left overnight, and in the morning it is slightly warmed.

Mallow has been proven mainly for inflammation of the mucous membranes inside the body, for gastritis, for inflammations of the mucous membranes of the urinary bladder, the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, and for ulcers in the stomach and intestines.

During the middle ages, Yarrow was purported to be able to assist in both summoning the devil and driving him away. It was used in complicated Christian #exorcismrituals. Pollen from yarrow was found in a 60,000 (or more) year old Neanderthal burial.

In the Victorian language of flowers, Yarrow can mean both war and healing.

HARVEST

Yarrow can be mixed with Queen Anne’s Lace, Hogweed, Water Hemlock, so one should be aware when harvesting. Traditionally, one is supposed to harvest yarrow on #Midsummer Day for magical use, just as the flowers open. It should be harvested early in the day after the dew has dried. Cut the stalks halfway down and hang upside down to dry. Harvest the youngest leaves as they emerge for eating.

We want to honor our ancestors, friends and clients, who came for the pop-up event last Saturday, where we presented freshly brewed cosmetics, ointments and perfume oils. Some of our altar totems, depicted also on the current merchandise, are the two #jaguars representing the night & day polarities. Also the image of Nana (Nanay) Chiricahua #Apache Indian warrior, who was one of the leaders in the Apaches’ final resistance against white domination.

The #Chiricahua autonym, or name by which they refer to themselves, is simply (depending on dialect) Nde, Ne, Néndé, Héndé, Hen-de or õne ("The People, Men", "the People of"); they never called themselves ″Apaches". The Chiricahua language (n'dee biyat'i) is a Southern Athabaskan language from the Na-dene language family. It is very closely related to #Mescalero, and more distantly related to Western Apache. It's considered a national language of Mexico.

Chiricahuas from Mexico participate every year in the Fiesta de los Remedios in Comonfort, #Guanajuato representing and performing their traditional dances and other ceremonies.

What is Extraction?

Extraction is the first step to separate the desired natural products from the raw materials. #Extractionmethods include solvent extraction, distillation method, pressing and sublimation according to the extraction principle. Solvent extraction is the most widely used method.

Generally, the finer the particle size is, the better result the extraction achieves. Too fine particle size, however, will cost the excessive absorption of solute in solid and difficulty in subsequent filtration.

Green extraction methods are being developed using modern technology where less or no organic solvents are used to minimize environmental and health impacts and to maximize the yield of desired polyphenols by selective extraction.

Polyphenols are abundant in natural sources like fruits, herbs and spices, nuts, roots and vegetables. Human health benefits, mainly as antioxidants, attracted researchers to recover them efficiently. Various types of food #polyphenols or phenolic compounds are identified. Solvents like water, alcohols (mainly ethanol and methanol) are used to extract polyphenols. Heat reflux, maceration, Soxhlet extraction, etc. were performed traditionally where large amounts of solvent had been used with longer time of extraction.

How to make your own #foodadditives?

From almost any fresh greens such as nettle, basil, parsley, kale, mangold, spinach etc., one can obtain potent juice, that will supply the body with green energy. Simply collect herbs from the garden to fill a kitchen blender. Pour a liter of boiled water over and let them #macerate for a couple of hours. Some grind the greens before pouring the water over them. It depends on the size of the #greens. After the water has cooled, grind the mixture and pour through a sieve, separating the pulp. The #liquidextraction can be stored in a glass bottle in the fridge and consumed throughout the day. The #greenpulp can be used in the making of soups or bakes. We went for a green-pancakes!

Between mid June and August is the #mulbery harvest time. Black- Morus Nigra, white- Morus Alba or red- Morus Ruba fruits, are beloved to the scarab, fruitworms and many birds. Mulberries contain iron, vitamin C and a good amount of fiber. Wonderful health benefits, mulberries are also good for hair and skin and for silk production.

To harvest them, taste that the fruit is sweet and then pick it up. Easiest way is by setting a tarp under the tree and then shaking the branches. Lay the berries in a container that is not too deep, so the berries don't crash. Wash them well, rinse and remove the stems. This is the most time consuming part and should be done with gloves, to protect the hands from coloring.

For 1kg of mulberry, add 600 gr brown sugar, 3 geranium leaves and 4 fresh lavender stems (only the buds). Put in pot sugar, berries and herbs and let sit until they release their liquid (a couple of hours or more). Boil the jam until 105° C degrees. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 min. Then add 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Mulberries aren't rich in pectin and often they are cooked with sugar with pectin. If you use pectin, you can cook them only for 15 min and then store in sterilized jars. One can also substitute the 600 gr of sugar with 1 1/2 cup honey and 1 cup brown sugar.

It takes about 2,5 hours to make. Plus the time for harvesting and sterilize the jars, so in total around 4 hours.

The geranium or only lavender buds, add fragrant aroma. Brown sugar or honey contain better nutrients than white sugar. Honey is also probiotic. We used the #DineviBeeFarm nomadic honey. We didn't use pectin, so boiling it twice was necessary.

From the North the Sun was sitting on its Tropic of Cancer chair, waving at us long lashes of light. In the steam of the evening sauna, the bathing fairies were emerging from the dark brown waters of the million swamp lands. Hopping giant brown rabbits were leading the celebrations deep into the forest. Welcome to the Northern Baltic Lands and Happy Midsommer from Onça!

During this potent time for collecting #herbs, sap and resins, we wanted to share an article we find very helpful, when considering the #planetary correspondences. Collecting plants according to many ancient sources has to be done in consideration of the pßlanets and their relations. Should be done in a #ritual manner, meaning the purity of the person collecting them is also essential. Recently Onça celebrated 5 years since the 1st clay pots for candles were moulded and painted. We want to honor our ancestors, friends and clients, who came for the pop-up event last Saturday, where we presented freshly brewed cosmetics, ointments and perfume oils. Thank you all for being part of our tribe. Also gratitude to those who inspire and work with us. #Onça is a collaboration of many talented artisans with aims to never cease to age well.

Some of our altar totems, depicted also on the current merchandise, are the two #jaguars representing the night & day polarities. Also the image of Nana (Nanay) Chiricahua #Apache Indian warrior, who was one of the leaders in the Apaches’ final resistance against white domination.

The #Chiricahua autonym, or name by which they refer to themselves, is simply (depending on dialect) Nde, Ne, Néndé, Héndé, Hen-de or õne ("The People, Men", "the People of"); they never called themselves ″Apaches". The Chiricahua language (n'dee biyat'i) is a Southern Athabaskan language from the Na-dene language family. It is very closely related to #Mescalero, and more distantly related to Western Apache. It's considered a national language of Mexico.

Chiricahuas from Mexico participate every year in the Fiesta de los Remedios in Comonfort, #Guanajuato representing and performing their traditional dances and other ceremonies.
