INCENSES= WATER + FIRE + AIR + EARTH + ETHER
🙏 Mudras – meaning ‘seal’, mark’ or ‘gesture’ in Sanskrit are said to intensify the effects of our yoga or meditation practice and enhance the flow of energy.
🙏 The specific origins of mudras are unknown although they’ve been around for thousands of years, appearing in varying religions and traditions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Tantric rituals, Roman art, Asian martial arts, Taoism and Indian classical dance.
🙏 The purpose of these hand gestures varies according to tradition – from focusing subtle energy, transmitting teaching through symbols, acting as a tool for healing illness, even attributing magical powers or psychic abilities to the practitioner.
🙏 In yoga and meditation many use mudras alongside Pranayama (yoga breathing exercises), usually when seated cross-legged in Sukhasana, Virasana or Padmasana. Mudras are also incorporated into the physical practice of yoga asana.
🙏 Performing mudras have been said to stimulate the flow of prana (life force or energy) throughout the body, and to quieten the mind by focusing it on the simple touch of our hands or fingers and to intensify the power of our practice.
🙏 According to Ayurveda – disease is the result of an imbalance in our body caused by a deficiency or an excess one of the five key elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. Each of these is said to play a specific role within the body and are represented by the five fingers:
The thumb – fire
The forefinger – wind
The middle finger – ether, aether (or space)
The ring finger – earth
The little finger – water
The fingers in essence act as electrical circuits and the use of mudras adjust the flow of energy which balance these elements, accentuating healing.

Mudras allow us to go inward and recharge our energy levels. The term mudra applies to the use of hand gestures during meditation that carry specific goals of channeling your body’s energy flow.
1. WATER
Prana Mudra = Space + Water
For the Water incense ritual the suiting mudra is Prana. The Prana mudra is said to be one of the most important mudras due to its ability to activate dormant energy in your body. Prana is the vital life force within all living things. This mudra will help awaken and enliven your personal prana, and put you more in tune with the prana around you.
Method: Perform this mudra by touching your ring and pinky fingers to the tip of your thumb, while keeping the other two fingers straight.
2. FIRE
Shuni Mudra = Space + Fire
For the Fire incense ritual the suiting mudra is Shuni (Shoonya). This gesture is used to improve intuition, alertness, and sensory powers. It also purifies your emotions and thoughts.
Method: This mudra is performed by touching the tip of the middle finger to the thumb tip, while keeping the other three fingers straight and relaxed.
3. AIR
Gyan Mudra = Space + Air
For the Air incense ritual the suiting mudra is Gyan. This is probably the most familiar mudra in mainstream society. Meditators are often seen pairing this mudra with their practice. The intention of the Gyan mudra is to improve your concentration and sharpen your memory. This is a great mudra to use when seeking to gain knowledge. Try holding this mudra while meditating for insight into your life or a specific issue.
Method: This mudra is performed by touching your index fingertip to the tip of your thumb, while holding your other three fingers straight.
4. EARTH
Buddhi Mudra = Space + Earth
For the Earth incense ritual the suiting mudra is Buddhi. This mudra is used for mental clarity. You perform this gesture when you need to understand intuitive messages from your subconscious (i.e., dreams or meditations that puzzle you). One of the most powerful benefits of this mudra can be found in the improvement of communication, such as improving internal and external dialogue.
Method: This mudra is performed by touching your thumb to your pinky finger, while holding your other three fingers straight.
5. ETHER
Dhyana Mudra = All the Elements
For the Eather incense ritual the suiting mudra is Dhyana. The Dhyana mudra is shared across several eastern meditation disciplines. The Buddha is often pictured doing this gesture. The significance of this mudra is to bring you into deeper, more profound concentration. This gesture can also help bring you tranquility and inner peace.
Method: To do the Dhyana mudra, simply sit with your hands facing upward, right hand resting on top of your left palm. The right hand, representing enlightenment and higher spiritual faculties, rests over the left hand, representing the world of maya, or illusion.

Sanskrit Mudras in Yoga
In Yoga each finger represents different elemental force. The Thumb is Agni-Fire, the Index finger is Value-Air, the Middle finger is Akasha-Eather, the Ring finger is Plitvi-Earth and the Little finger is Gel-Water. In Hieromancy the fingers correspond also with the Zodiacal Signs and the Planets. The Thumb to Venus, the Index finger to Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Jupiter, the Middle finger to Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and Saturn, the Ring finger to Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Sun and the Little finger to Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Mercury.
The Finger types & their Corresponding Elements
The 3 types of fingerprints are Whirls, Loops, and Ridges. The most common is Loops with 60-65%. Loops correspond to the element of Water and reveal a personality trades of: survivor, healing abilities, flexible, need for peace, can change many life paths. Whirls is the next common fingerprint with 30-35%. Whirls correspond to the element of Fire: need for freedom, gifted, inspired creative, self centered, need for isolation. The least common would be Arches or ridges with 5%. Arches correspond with the element of Earth and are trustworthy, resourceful, finding solutions, earth-bound, can’t let go.
Esoteric Knowledge of the Sources, Forces & Elements
In Thai Chi the “Higher Limit” consists of four elements. One black, one white interacting in waves, representing the “great movement of life”. This is the spiral, where the principles Yin and Yang are activated. When the waves have integrated opposing black in the white and white in the black dots, that represents the active and passive forces, that are the four natural forces. From them the Yin and Yan give birth to the elements. There are 10 Natural Elements in the Universe. Five are visible in the physical realm and five are invisible supreme cosmic hierarchy elements. The visible five elements are Water, Fire, Wood, Metal and Earth, from which rises the diversity of the material world. The Water gives birth to the tree, the Tree gives birth to the fire, the Fire gives birth to the earth, the Earth gives birth to the metal and the Metal gives birth to the water. In addition to arising, they overcome each other, they enter into a mutual struggle. In term of the Water extinguishes the fire, the Fire melts the metal, the Metal destroys the tree, the Tree destroys the earth, the Earth is destroyed by the Water.
Eventually there are four Earth forces: Water, Fire, Air, Earth and four Cosmical forces: Time, Space, Prima Materia, Plasma. These forces are accordingly positioned on the four directions, where the Earth elements take the axes on the east, south, west and north. The Cosmic elements are positioned in between them on the east-south, south-west, west-north and north-east axes. On the top and bottom of these axes we have the location of the Zenith and Nadir axes. Above sits the Sky and below is the Earth. In between we have the Man as the Mediator, who has to harmonize between the Micro and Macrocosm. This explanations of the natural forces are found in any ancient or modern esoteric teachings. The Chinese and Vedas had well implemented the knowledge of using the philosophy of the Cosmos in their healing systems.
The idea that all phenomena of the world around us, including the human and the nature, are the interaction between the “two origins” the Active and the Passive. They knew that there is no such a thing as “disease”, that is disturbance of the harmony. There where the harmony is disturbed between the three-dimensional essence of man: spirit, soul and body, where is disturbance in the inner parts of these three parts, then disease occurs. In the Hinduism these Yin and Yang forces are called Purusha and Prakriti that take more of feminine and masculine aspect. Paracelsus calls these Anima and Animus. The runes have named them Algiz and “Yr, Eur, Irr”, that present “protection” and “death”. This passive and active principle is seen in the foundation of i-ching as the Chiao lines. The whole line Yin Chiao is the active and the dashed Yang Chiao line is the passive or reflective principle. The double lines called in west “diagrams” have two groups of Young Yin and Young Yan and Old Yin and Old Yang. We find this also in the ancient Scandinavian epos Edda seen as the Young Edda and the Old Edda versions.
Magical Properties
♦ Myrrh is together with gold and Frankincense the gifts that the three wise men brought to the newborn Christ. It has been celebrated by many cultures through millennia for its use as incense and herbal remedies. Myrrh is sacred to the Great Mother, whether she is called Mary, Isis, or Binah. (The names “Mary” and “Myrrh” both probably derive from the Hebrew word for “bitter.”) It is an herb of the ancient Goddess, especially in her aspect as She Who Mourns and who hears the cries of the mourning. The energy of Myrrh evokes both the dark ancient earth and the great black sea. Ritually, it is used to heal grief, nurture wisdom, and honor the dead.
Myrrh corresponds to Saturn and the Kabbalistic sphere Binah according to Liber 777, which makes it suitable for the work of exploring the unknown, bringing structure, focus on the earth and water element, as well as death processes and rebirth. Myrrh is also often used to clean a space and raise the consciousness. It is common for myrrh to be mixed with other incense resins like Frankincense.
One of the myrrh’s properties is to open up the emotional body where dilapidated emotions can be released so that they no longer are like plugs in the subconscious, which takes energy and prevents the consciousness from moving freely. This corresponds according to Liber 777 with Binah’s (3) passive side linked to sorrow and bitterness. In this case, bitterness is an effect of the blocked of emotions, where grief is the death process that causes the blockages to be torn down and the operator is released and reborn. Myrrh also corresponds to Liber 777 with path 23 (Mem – the hanged man) and the water element.
♦ Elemi Manila: “The name Elemi is derived from an Arabic phrase meaning ‘above and below’, an abbreviation of ‘As above, so below’ and this tells us something about its action on the emotional and spiritual planes.” This then, explains the crazy contrast in Elemi Manila’s uses – in embalming corpses, in the construction of boats, and even in medicinal and personal care applications
♦ Spruce: Forests have been found to have a healing effect on children’s allergies, prompting the Japanese to develop so-called health forests into an actual product. Mankind learnt to utilize the natural products of forests eons ago, with the use of spruce resin going back generations. A medical journal dating back to as early as 1578, written by Benedictus Olai, refers to the benefits of resin. Many Finns will also undoubtedly recall their grandparents talking about resin chewing gum and the use of resin as a bandage.
♦ Agarwood: There are mentions of most excellent aloes (oud wood) of Kamarupa being carried by the pilgrims all the way to the then western Indian city of Multan (now in present day Pakistan) to pay as tribute in a temple. During those days in Kamarupa, oud was one of the main items of cosmetics. In the Hebrew Bible, “trees of lign aloes” are mentioned in The Book of Numbers 24:6 and a perfume compounded of aloeswood, myrrh, and cassia is described in Psalms 45. Agarwood is highly revered in Hinduism, Chinese Folk Religion and Islam. It is to this day still used in traditional chinese herbal medicince where it goes by the name of Chén Xiāng – 沉香 – Literally meaning ‘sinking fragrance’.
♦ Frankincense has been used for centuries, and burnt on alters and in temples. According to the Liber 777 tables, Frankincense, named Olibanum (the same incense) corresponds to the solar sphere (6) as well as the 19:th path (Teth – Streangth), 30:th (Resh – the Sun) and 31:st (Shin – Judgment) which are elements of air and fire. Its solar connection also shows in that Frankincense was, in addition to gold and myrrh, the gift to the newborn Jesus from the three wise men; and that it is the incense most closely linked to Christianity and widely used in the Orthodox & Catholic Church.
The sun sphere is the Kabbalic sphere Tifaret, which is located in the middle of the tree and can be said to balance the other spheres; Thoughts & feelings, compassion & boundaries, sacred & profane, etc. The sphere is linked to the higher self, HGA or Daemon, the soul, the atman etc. If the moon sphere Yesod is seen as the subconscious, the sun sphere Tifaret would be the superconscious, one’s essence which does not identify with one’s thought, behavioral or emotional patterns in the chalice of the astral plane.
Frankincense is thus an excellent incense to get in touch with that part of one’s being that looks beyond the dreams of the sleeping consciousness and light the star of the sun sphere that can be followed through the dark and cold of the symbolic night.
♦ Indian Dammar, know also as Cat’s Eye is used as an astringent in Ayurvedic medicine and burned as incense in Hindu ceremonies. As incense it is known to lift sadness and melancholy. Its aroma is light and uplifting, it lifts the user up and brings a feeling of safety, clarity, serenity and peace. Dammar, which means “the light” is often burned to combat mourning, depression and melancholy. It is said to help with clairvoyance, contact with angels and deities from the higher spheres, raises the mood, purifies and heals, gives strength and raises the consciousness.
♦ Labdanum – from the Cistus plant (better known to some gardeners as Rock Rose) – is a pillar of chypre perfumes and many Orientals. The early Arab perfumers used labdanum in their recipes – ‘the sweetest-scented of all substances’, as it was described, its links to perfumery actually go back to Egyptian time, when labdanum (a.k.a. ladanon, black balsam and gum cistus) was a key ingredient in the kyphi incense blend, used for ceremonial purposes. It’s also referred to in the Bible (as Balm of Gilead).
♦ Black Copal is also called Night Copal and is connected to the mysteries of the night. It’s also traditionally burned to the dead. Traditionally, copal has been used, among other things, as a sacrifice to deities, and has even been called “food for the gods”. This makes Copal also today an excellent sacrifice to the deities you work magically with. The Black Copal is soothing and calming and helps us to get in touch with the deeper aspects of our being. It is often burned in Mexico on the day of the dead (Día de los muertos) where it is said to help the dead find their way back home.
♦ Pine was sacred to the Druids and has been considered a symbol of longevity in many cultures around the world. Pine is the “Tree of Peace” by the Native American Confederacy Iroquois. Pine is used in certain contexts for defense/counter magic and to throw back bad vibes placed on the user (Return to Sender). The scent of Pine resin brings us astraly to the forest, its mysteries and primordial force. Pine can be burned to clean the home and the branches are usually used as decoration to bring healing and joy. The cones can be worn as a fertility charm.
♦ Benzoin represents Shakti and “the Sacred Feminine”. The heavy, musky, creamy and sweet scent brings the thoughts of a women’s vagina and the mystery of the symbolic cave. Benzoin is burnt in Hindu temples to the main masculine gods Trimutri-Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Which may possibly be seen as a gift of the feminine to the masculine. The three consorts of Trimutri are Tridevi, the three goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati / Kali. Benzoin can thus be represented by Tridevi, the primordial energy / female power. According to Crowley’s Liber 777, Benzoin corresponds to Venus and the Kabbalistic sphere Netzach (7).
